You get home tired. The fridge is empty or full of things that don't go together. Cooking feels like a massive effort. DoorDash is right there. $16 later, problem solved. Until tomorrow, when it happens again.
You're spending $400-600/month on food delivery. Here's how to cut that in half without becoming a chef.
The Problem Isn't Cooking Skill
It's decision fatigue. You don't know what to make, you don't have the ingredients, and by the time you figure it out you're too hungry and tired to bother. The fix isn't learning to cook — it's removing the decisions.
The 5-Meal Rotation
Pick 5 meals. Just 5. You'll rotate them Monday through Friday. Same meals every week until you get bored, then swap one out. Here are 5 that anyone can make:
Monday: Tacos. Brown ground beef. Add taco seasoning packet and water. Put in tortillas with shredded cheese, salsa, sour cream. 12 minutes.
Tuesday: Pasta. Boil pasta. Heat jar sauce. Combine. Add parmesan if you're feeling fancy. 15 minutes.
Wednesday: Sheet pan chicken. Chicken thighs + chopped vegetables on a baking sheet. Oil, salt, pepper. Oven 400°F for 25 minutes. You do nothing while it cooks.
Thursday: Stir fry. Slice any protein. Fry with frozen stir-fry vegetables. Add soy sauce. Serve over microwave rice. 10 minutes.
Friday: Takeout. You earned it. But now it's a treat, not a default.
The One Shopping Trip
- Sunday: buy everything for the 5 meals. Here's the list:
- Ground beef, chicken thighs, one other protein
- Taco seasoning, tortillas, shredded cheese, salsa, sour cream
- Pasta, jar sauce, parmesan
- Frozen stir-fry vegetables, soy sauce, microwave rice
- Whatever vegetables you like (peppers, broccoli, potatoes)
- Oil, salt, pepper (you buy these once)
Total: $30-40. That's 4 dinners for the price of 2 DoorDash orders.
The Trick That Makes It Stick
Put the meal plan on your fridge. Monday = tacos. Tuesday = pasta. When you get home, you don't think "what should I make?" You look at the fridge and start. The decision is already made.
The Math
Before: $15 average × 7 nights = $105/week = $450/month After: $35 groceries + $15 Friday takeout = $50/week = $215/month
Savings: $235/month. $2,820/year. From 5 basic meals.
