The Problem
I adopted a rescue dog a week ago and they hide under the bed, won't eat, and flinch when I reach for them. I expected some adjustment but this feels extreme. I'm worried they're sick or that I made a mistake. I want to help them but everything I do seems to make it worse. The shelter said they were friendly but this dog is terrified of everything.
The Plan
Week 1-2: Give Them Space (The 3-3-3 Rule)
Follow the 3-3-3 rule: 3 days to decompress, 3 weeks to learn your routine, 3 months to feel at home
Don't force interaction โ sit near them quietly, read a book, let them come to you on their terms
Put food and water near their safe spot, not in a busy area. Try hand-feeding high-value treats (chicken, cheese) to build trust
Keep the house calm: no loud music, no visitors, no sudden movements. Their nervous system is overwhelmed
If they haven't eaten anything in 48+ hours, call your vet โ but reduced appetite for the first few days is normal for rescue dogs
Week 3-4: Build Trust Slowly
Establish a predictable routine: same feeding times, same walk times, same bedtime โ predictability creates safety
Let them sniff you before petting. Pet under the chin, not over the head โ reaching over a fearful dog's head feels threatening
Short, positive experiences: a 5-minute gentle walk, a treat tossed near them, sitting on the floor at their level
Don't rush milestones โ every dog adjusts at their own pace. Some take days, some take months
Consider a certified dog behaviorist if fear doesn't improve after 3-4 weeks

Follow-Up Result
4 weeks in: the 3-3-3 rule was exactly right. Day 3, she came out from under the bed to eat while I sat quietly across the room. Week 2, she started following me around the house at a distance. Week 3, she let me pet her for the first time and her tail wagged. Now at week 4, she sleeps on the couch next to me, eats enthusiastically, and gets excited for walks. The shelter was right โ she IS friendly, she was just terrified. The key was patience and not forcing anything. Hand-feeding was the trust-building breakthrough. She's a completely different dog than the one who hid under the bed on day one.Know someone with this problem?
