Read 6 books in 6 weeks after building a simple reading habit

The Problem

I buy books constantly but I never finish them. I have a stack of 15 unread books on my nightstand. I start with enthusiasm, read 30 pages, then get distracted by my phone and never pick it up again. I used to love reading as a kid but somewhere along the way I lost the habit. I want to be a reader again but I can't seem to focus long enough to get through a chapter.

The Plan

Week 1-2: Make Reading Easy

  • Put your phone in another room during reading time โ€” this is non-negotiable. Your phone is the enemy of reading
  • Read for just 10 minutes before bed โ€” not 30, not an hour. Ten minutes. Build the habit before the duration
  • Keep a book everywhere: nightstand, bag, bathroom, car โ€” when you have a moment, read instead of scroll
  • Start with a book you're genuinely excited about, not one you think you "should" read โ€” enjoyment builds the habit
  • It's okay to quit books you're not enjoying โ€” life is too short for boring books. Give it 50 pages and move on if it's not working
  • Week 3-4: Build Momentum

  • Try audiobooks for commutes, walks, and chores โ€” they count as reading and they're perfect for multitasking
  • Join a book club (in-person or online) โ€” accountability and discussion make reading social
  • Track your reading: Goodreads, a simple list, or a reading journal โ€” seeing progress is motivating
  • Increase reading time gradually: 10 minutes โ†’ 15 โ†’ 20 โ†’ 30. Let it grow naturally
  • Set a modest goal: 1 book per month is 12 books per year, which is more than most adults read
  • Resources

  • Libby app โ€” free audiobooks and ebooks from your local library
  • Goodreads โ€” track books and get recommendations
  • r/books and r/52book โ€” reading communities and challenges
  • Your local library โ€” free books, audiobooks, and a quiet place to read
  • Follow-Up Result

6 weeks in: I've read 6 books. The 10-minute rule was the key โ€” most nights I end up reading for 30-40 minutes because once I start, I don't want to stop. Putting my phone in the kitchen drawer at 9pm was the single most important change. I also discovered Libby and I've been listening to audiobooks during my commute โ€” I "read" an entire book last week just driving to and from work. I quit 2 books I wasn't enjoying without guilt and picked up ones I loved instead. My nightstand stack is shrinking and I'm actually excited about what to read next.
