Making decisions faster using time limits and the good-enough principle

The Problem

I can't make decisions. I spent 3 hours researching which toothpaste to buy. I've been "thinking about" changing jobs for 2 years. I read every review, weigh every option, and still can't commit because what if I choose wrong? The fear of making the wrong decision means I make no decision at all. My life is on hold because I can't stop overthinking.

The Plan

Week 1-2: Understand Your Pattern

  • Recognize that perfectionism is driving your indecision โ€” you're trying to find the "best" option when "good enough" is perfectly fine
  • Learn the difference between reversible and irreversible decisions: toothpaste is reversible (low stakes), marriage is less so (high stakes). Treat them differently
  • Set time limits for decisions: 5 minutes for small decisions, 1 day for medium, 1 week for large. When time's up, decide
  • The 70% rule: if you have 70% of the information you need, decide. Waiting for 100% means waiting forever
  • Accept that some decisions will be wrong โ€” and that's okay. You can course-correct. Indecision is also a choice, and usually the worst one
  • Week 3-4: Build Decision Muscles

  • For small decisions: flip a coin. If you're disappointed with the result, you know what you actually wanted
  • For medium decisions: list pros and cons, set a timer for 15 minutes, then decide. No more research after the timer
  • For big decisions: talk to 3 people you trust, sleep on it one night, then commit
  • Practice making fast, low-stakes decisions daily: what to eat, what to wear, which route to take. Build the muscle
  • Stop researching after you've decided โ€” reading reviews after buying something only creates regret
  • Resources

  • "The Paradox of Choice" by Barry Schwartz โ€” why more options make us less happy
  • "Thinking, Fast and Slow" by Daniel Kahneman โ€” understanding decision-making psychology
  • Therapy โ€” especially helpful for perfectionism-driven indecision
  • r/DecisionMaking โ€” community support for chronic overthinkers
  • Follow-Up Result

6 weeks in: the time limits changed everything. I now give myself 5 minutes for anything under $50 and one day for anything under $500. I bought a new phone in 30 minutes instead of 3 weeks of research โ€” and I'm perfectly happy with it. For the job decision, I gave myself 2 weeks to research and apply, then committed. I start next month. The coin flip trick is surprisingly effective for small decisions โ€” it reveals what you actually want. I still overthink sometimes but I have tools now. The biggest realization: a "good enough" decision made today is better than a "perfect" decision made never.
