Cat redirected to scratching posts after strategic placement and positive reinforcement

The Problem

My cat has shredded the corners of my couch, scratched up my dining chairs, and is working on the bedroom doorframe. I've bought scratching posts but she ignores them and goes straight for the furniture. I've tried spray deterrents and aluminum foil but nothing works. I'm not going to declaw her but I also can't keep replacing furniture. My couch looks like it survived a war.

The Plan

Week 1-2: Provide Better Options

  • Cats scratch to stretch, mark territory, and maintain their claws โ€” it's a need, not a behavior problem
  • Place scratching posts RIGHT NEXT to the furniture she's scratching โ€” not in a corner she never goes to
  • Try different materials: sisal rope, cardboard, carpet, wood โ€” cats have preferences. If she scratches your couch fabric, get a post with similar texture
  • Make posts tall enough for a full stretch โ€” short posts are useless. Cats need to reach up and pull down
  • Rub catnip on the scratching posts to attract her โ€” sprinkle it generously
  • Week 3-4: Protect and Redirect

  • Cover damaged furniture corners with double-sided tape (Sticky Paws) โ€” cats hate the sticky feeling on their paws
  • When you catch her scratching furniture, calmly redirect to the post โ€” pick her up and place her near it
  • Reward her every time she uses the post: treats, praise, chin scratches โ€” positive reinforcement works better than punishment
  • Trim her nails every 2-3 weeks โ€” shorter nails do less damage
  • Consider nail caps (Soft Paws) as a temporary solution while training โ€” they're painless and prevent damage
  • Resources

  • Sticky Paws double-sided tape โ€” furniture protection strips
  • Soft Paws nail caps โ€” painless, temporary nail covers

  • Follow-Up Result

4 weeks in: the key was putting the scratching post right next to the couch corner she was destroying. She started using it within 2 days. I put double-sided tape on the couch corners and she hated it โ€” stopped scratching the couch immediately. Tried three different post materials and she loves the sisal rope one. I sprinkle catnip on it weekly and she goes to town. I also got a tall cat tree with built-in scratching surfaces and she uses it constantly. The furniture scratching has stopped completely. I trim her nails biweekly now which also helps. The couch is scarred but no new damage.
