The Problem
There's black mold growing on my bathroom ceiling, in the grout, and around the shower caulk. It keeps coming back no matter how many times I clean it. I'm worried about health effects โ I've been coughing more and my allergies seem worse. I don't know if this is the dangerous kind of mold or just regular bathroom grossness. I rent and my landlord hasn't responded to my maintenance request.
The Plan
Week 1-2: Clean and Assess
Most bathroom mold is surface mold from moisture, not the dangerous "toxic black mold" โ but clean it regardless
Clean with a solution of 1 part bleach to 10 parts water, or use a commercial mold cleaner. Wear gloves and open a window
For grout: apply the solution, let it sit 15 minutes, scrub with a stiff brush, rinse thoroughly
For caulk: if mold is IN the caulk (not just on it), remove the old caulk completely and re-caulk with mold-resistant silicone
If mold covers more than 10 square feet, or is behind walls, call a professional โ that's beyond DIY
Week 3-4: Prevent It From Returning
Run the bathroom exhaust fan during and for 30 minutes after every shower โ moisture is the #1 cause of bathroom mold
If you don't have an exhaust fan, open the window or door after showering
Squeegee shower walls after each use โ takes 30 seconds and removes the moisture mold needs to grow
Spray shower walls weekly with a mold-prevention spray (Concrobium or diluted vinegar)
If you rent: document the mold with photos and send a written maintenance request โ landlords are legally required to address mold in most states

Follow-Up Result
4 weeks in: cleaned all visible mold with bleach solution and re-caulked the entire shower with mold-resistant silicone ($8). The caulk replacement made the biggest difference โ the old caulk was full of mold that no amount of surface cleaning could fix. I now run the exhaust fan for 30 minutes after every shower and squeegee the walls. Zero mold regrowth in 4 weeks. My landlord finally responded after I sent a written request with photos โ they replaced the exhaust fan with a more powerful one. My coughing has stopped and my allergies improved. The lesson: bathroom mold is almost always a ventilation problem, not a cleaning problem.Know someone with this problem?
