My puppy bites everything including me and I'm losing my mind

Biting reduced by 90% using redirection and enforced nap schedule

The Problem

My 4-month-old puppy bites everything โ€” my hands, my ankles, the furniture, the carpet, my clothes. I've tried saying "no," yelping, and putting bitter spray on things but nothing works. My hands look like I lost a fight with a cheese grater. I love this dog but I'm starting to wonder if I made a mistake. Everyone says "it's just a phase" but I need it to stop NOW.

The Plan

Week 1-2: Redirect, Don't Punish

  • Every single time the puppy bites you, immediately redirect to an appropriate chew toy โ€” consistency is everything
  • Keep chew toys in every room so you always have one within reach
  • When they bite, say "ouch" calmly, remove your hand, and offer the toy โ€” if they take it, praise them
  • If they keep biting after redirection, calmly leave the room for 30 seconds โ€” this teaches that biting ends the fun
  • Frozen Kongs stuffed with peanut butter are a lifesaver โ€” they satisfy the chewing urge for 20+ minutes
  • Week 3-4: Enforce Naps and Structure

  • Overtired puppies bite MORE โ€” most puppies need 18-20 hours of sleep per day
  • Enforce nap times in a crate or pen: 1 hour awake, 2 hours napping โ€” this schedule is transformative
  • Exercise before training sessions โ€” a tired puppy is a less bitey puppy
  • Start teaching "leave it" with treats โ€” this builds impulse control that transfers to biting
  • Never play rough with your hands โ€” use toys for tug and play so hands are never seen as toys
  • Week 5-6: Build Bite Inhibition

  • Allow gentle mouthing but immediately stop play for any hard bites โ€” this teaches pressure control
  • Gradually raise the standard: first stop hard bites, then medium, then any teeth on skin
  • Puppy playdates are excellent โ€” other puppies teach bite inhibition better than humans can
  • If biting spikes, check if they're teething (usually 4-6 months) โ€” frozen washcloths help sore gums
  • Remember: this genuinely is a phase. Most puppies grow out of the worst of it by 6-7 months
  • Resources

  • Kikopup YouTube channel โ€” force-free puppy training that actually works
  • r/puppy101 โ€” supportive community that understands the "puppy blues"
  • Zak George's Dog Training Revolution โ€” beginner-friendly training videos
  • KONG Classic toy โ€” the single best investment for a bitey puppy
  • Follow-Up Result

6 weeks in: biting is down about 90%. The enforced nap schedule was the single biggest change โ€” turns out our puppy was massively overtired and that was driving most of the biting. The redirection became automatic and now the puppy goes to find a toy on their own when they want to chew. Frozen Kongs are a daily lifesaver. Puppy playdates at the local park helped enormously with bite inhibition. Hands are healed. Still occasional mouthing but it's gentle and we can redirect easily. The "puppy blues" are real but they pass.
