The Problem
I haven't had a job interview in over six years. I've been at the same company and now I have an interview next week for a role I really want. I don't know what interviews are like now โ do they still ask "what's your biggest weakness?" I'm terrified I'll freeze up or ramble. My confidence is shot because I've been in the same role so long I feel like I've forgotten how to sell myself.
The Plan
Week 1: Research and Prepare
Study the company inside out: mission, recent news, competitors, culture โ check Glassdoor for interview questions others got
Write down 5-7 STAR stories (Situation, Task, Action, Result) from your current role that show impact
Practice answering "tell me about yourself" in under 2 minutes โ this is your elevator pitch
Prepare 3-4 thoughtful questions to ask them โ shows genuine interest
Update your outfit and plan logistics so you're not stressed on the day
Week 2: Practice Until It Feels Natural
Do at least 3 mock interviews: with a friend, in front of a mirror, or record yourself on your phone
Practice the pause โ when asked a tough question, it's okay to say "great question, let me think about that"
Prepare for behavioral questions: conflict resolution, leadership, failure, teamwork
Research salary range on Glassdoor/Payscale so you're ready if they ask expectations
Get a good night's sleep the night before โ no last-minute cramming

Follow-Up Result
4 weeks in: got the job. The STAR method was a game-changer โ I had specific stories ready for every behavioral question. The interviewer actually said "that's a great example" twice. I asked about team culture and growth opportunities which led to a genuine conversation. The mock interviews with my partner were awkward but they made the real thing feel easier. Negotiated $5K more than the initial offer because I'd researched the salary range. Starting next month.Know someone with this problem?
