Credit score improved from 520 to 670 in three months with dispute letters and on-time payments

The Problem

My credit score is 520. I can't get approved for an apartment, my car insurance is higher because of it, and I got denied for a basic credit card. I have some old collections, a couple of late payments, and I honestly don't fully understand what's on my credit report. I feel like I'm being punished for mistakes I made years ago and I don't know how to dig myself out.

The Plan

Week 1-2: Know What You're Dealing With

  • Pull your free credit reports from all three bureaus at AnnualCreditReport.com โ€” this is the only official free source
  • Go through every item line by line: what's accurate, what's wrong, what's old
  • Dispute any errors in writing โ€” wrong balances, accounts that aren't yours, incorrect late payments. Send disputes to each bureau
  • Check the age of negative items: most fall off after 7 years. If something is close, it may not be worth fighting
  • Don't pay collections without negotiating a "pay for delete" agreement in writing first
  • Week 3-4: Start Building Positive History

  • Get a secured credit card: you put down a deposit ($200-500) and that becomes your credit limit. Use it for one small purchase per month and pay it off in full
  • Set up autopay for every bill โ€” payment history is 35% of your score and one late payment can tank it
  • Keep credit utilization under 30% โ€” if your limit is $500, never carry more than $150
  • Become an authorized user on a family member's old, well-managed credit card โ€” their positive history helps yours
  • Don't apply for multiple credit cards at once โ€” each application is a hard inquiry that temporarily lowers your score
  • Resources

  • AnnualCreditReport.com โ€” free credit reports from all three bureaus
  • Credit Karma โ€” free credit monitoring and score tracking
  • r/CRedit โ€” community advice on credit repair strategies
  • Consumer Financial Protection Bureau โ€” free templates for dispute letters
  • Follow-Up Result

12 weeks in: my score went from 520 to 670. I disputed 3 items on my credit report โ€” two were errors and got removed within 30 days. Negotiated a pay-for-delete on a $340 collection that was dragging me down. Got a secured card with a $300 limit and used it only for gas, paying it off every month. My mom added me as an authorized user on her 15-year-old card which boosted my average account age. The biggest jump came from the disputes being removed โ€” that was 80 points alone. I can now qualify for a normal apartment lease. Still working toward 700+ but the trajectory is clear.
